How Chat GPT is Affecting Communications

We’ve all been there -  you’re stuck for a content creation idea, and you aren’t sure what to write next. Luckily with a few key strokes, technology can often provide the inspiration we need.

ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, is the next generation of AI technology. Developed in November 2022, ChatGPT is a chatbot built to facilitate conversations learned through human interactions. The bot, originally  designed for customer service tasks, is able to ask followup questions and even acknowledge mistakes.

Depending on how well a question is written, the technology can replicate human writing. And, it is able to inform on a variety of topics, assuming the question asked is not based on opinions. For example, if you ask ChatGPT to tell you a joke about public relations its response might be, “Why did the public relations specialist refuse to skydive?…Because they didn't want to risk a bad image!”

ChatGPT’s Impact on Communications

While ChatGPT is impressive, it won’t soon replace the role of a communications professional. Telling a brand's story requires relationship building and leaning into emotional intelligence, things the chatbot is unable to replicate.

While ChatGPT can save time, it is not a substitute for one-on-one communication. It will never replace the collaboration that our team here at Kane requires for brainstorming, development and implementation.

That said, the AI platform does offer a few benefits to assist customer service-based companies. ChatGPT eliminates the language barrier and allows for more personalized service. With AI technologies handling these requests, employees can focus on strategic work, thereby increasing team productivity.

Downfall of AI- Is It Ethical?

Artificial intelligence does have its limits. Considering the technology’s prompts are based on information found on the internet, the accuracy of responses can sometimes be called into question. According to Euronews, “the software has caused widespread concern when it comes to ethical issues, especially cheating in academia.” If you ask ChatGPT the same exact question it will generate a similar response every time. However, it doesn’t know if the answer is accurate or true. ChatGPT’s website also states that the bot is not intended to give advice.

Best Practices When Using ChatGPT

According to a poll conducted by PR News, “the majority of Twitter voters (43%) said they would not use ChatGPT.”  Just over one-third (36%) suggest they would use ChatGPT for writing social media copy and ads, only 19% would use it for press releases and 13% for customer service on social media.

While the chatbot is great for idea generation, it is not a replacement for the finished product. Human connection and original writing will always be required in communications. ChatGPT might make your brain think in a different way, however,  it shouldn’t be relied on for personalized creative and strategic thinking. Remember, “The heart of effective communications is connecting with people” (VentureBeat).
